The S is Missing
Posted on June 23rd, 2009 No comments
Friday, the day Apple releases the iPhone 3G S. I order an upgrade from Rogers Canada.Today, I receive an iPhone in the mail, and it’s the wrong model.
Words of wisdom, don’t order a phone using a phone.

Apple Support Is Awesome
Posted on May 9th, 2009 No commentsThey respect you when you have already diagnosed the issue yourself (even 1st level support) and just the process alone they use when transferring you to a specialist. Shows great professionalism.

When Technology Really Sucks!
Posted on May 7th, 2009 3 commentsMy Macbook Pro just decided to stop working. I won’t do into technical details but it came to the point where I dropped it off at Mac Outpost here in London.
Now normally the Mac Outpost guys are great! But I’m not sure what happened to them but they’ve had the laptop for over 24 hours without having even looked at it. This is not acceptable as the laptop is basically my hammer. My primary tool!
While I don’t want to spread bad things about these guys here in London Ontario at Mac Outpost, currently I’m really frustrated!
I expect computers to break-down, but it’s way too often that they do.
UPDATE May 09
Apple is replacing the logic board for free even though it’s out of warranty. See this KB article for more info. -
Disgusting Technology Writers
Posted on October 21st, 2008 1 commentApple a Bigger Open Source Enemy than Microsoft? I can almost guarantee that you did not click on that link. Nor are you interested in doing so.
Stuff like that is absolutely disgusting. It is true that Apple is very protective of their IP, but please name one open source project from Microsoft that is of substance. Now take a look at Mac OS Forge. Directly from Apple we have Webkit, directly used by the KDE project, Google’s Android platform, and other light-weight browsers. How about the Darwin Streaming Server? A very easy to use and intuitive, full featured audio and video streaming server for RTP and RTSP. It can be used in tandem with their commercial QuickTime Streaming Server product. Then there’s ZFS, launchd, XQuartz, CalendarServer, not to mention Darwin (the core OS layer for Apple’s Mac OS X) itself.
Sure, the iPhone is not what we hoped for, and iTunes is still laden with DRM, but the proof is in the pudding, and using a Mac is unbelievably better than any completely open source OS available today, no matter what any zealous fanatics say.

Well I went and bought myself a Macbook Pro. First I checked every Staples and Bestbuy store in the local area. When they didn’t have the one I wanted in stock. (They were either bought-out or didn’t carry them.)
So I ordered one from Staples.ca. They deliver next day but since I ordered after 6pm they delivered two days later. But it was the wrong machine. Inside I found a white Macbook 2GHZ little thing. So I call them straight away and the next day they drop by and pick up the delivered book dropping off the one I wanted and paid for.
Overall I would continue to recommend Staples.ca. So long as someone is there to receive it as they’ll try twice and cancel the order otherwise.
But now to the good stuff, I like the trackpad. Use two fingers to scroll/zoom. Tap with two fingers to do a right click. The keyboard is great once you get used to it, especially how it lights up automatically as the lighting decreases. I setup an 802.11n network with WPA2 security and it works great.
It’s amazingly fast, especially coming from a PPC machine.I wouldn’t mind if the battery lasted a little longer. But you probably could say that about every laptop currently in production.
Bootcamp is incredibly easy to use. I’ve installed Vista along with Mac OS X.
Talking about operating systems I pre-ordered Leapord yesterday. Haven’t used it yet so we’ll see how good it really is.The Wissmann Family was over here for a few days. I’ve recorded and edited each session and we will probably make them available on lighthousegospel.net in the coming days.
