Australia From a HillAs you may know, I’m currently driving with another eNerd across Australia. We have arrived in Adelaide today. Here’s a photo (taken in Western Australia)

I have a lot of videos and photos, but will probably have to wait until we get back to post them all because of bandwidth.

  • Still Alive, Believe it Or Not

Seeing is believing, or so they say.

This photo was taken on September 28, 2008 on top of the Serpentine Dam. Decided to give the cars a rest.

But blessed are those who believe, but have not seen.

  • Second NerdMobile in WA

Finally, after weeks of effort we have a second NerdMobile (volkswagon red branded beetle) in Western Australia!!!! It took a bit of rigmarol to find the right papers and get to the right people, etc. But it’s done. And I’m quite thankful for that!

  • Forest Fire’s in Perth

Posted on September 5th, 2008 Arthur 1 comment

Was driving to Northam yesterday evening, and it looked like rain clouds were coming. Getting a little further you could see that it was actually smoke. Going even further you could smell the smoke.

Forest fires here in Perth are quite common. It’s a really dry climate in the vast majority of areas, and fires are started easily. They are started by nature, but many times sadly are started intentionally be humans, who for some reason enjoy it.

  • Saw my First Kangaroo in AU

Posted on August 30th, 2008 Arthur 4 comments

Well, just the other day I saw my first Australian kangaroo, nice and easy. Two of them hoping through a suburb.

They are just like the dear in Canada, you have to be careful when driving because if they get in front of you, they don’t move.

Another interesting little animal we have here is called the red back spider. They bite, and when they do you’re either dead or disabled for at least 3 months.

So you kind of want to stay clear of them. One thing that is definitely different over here is that you have to watch what you’re doing. Not checking closely before lifting something off the ground, can kill you.

  • Communicating with Aussies

Posted on August 25th, 2008 Arthur No comments

Australian slang, and slobering of the english language. It’s going to take a little while to get used to how people talk. For the most part they’re easy to understand, but I find myself often asking them to repeat what they just said, simply because one important word is missing from my vocabulary, and cannot be aided by the remaining words understood.

But I’ve had a few comments where they like my Canadian accent, so it seems true. The only reason we like other people’s accents are because they’re different, something outside of normallity. Isn’t that true with people as well. We are attracted to those who stand out, who are different, not those who just try to blend in with everybody else. One of the reasons I have not been trying to pickup the aussie accent. It’ll come soon enough.

  • Sunrise in Auckland, New Zealand

Ended up in Auckland, NZ in time to watch the sunrise, so I got to see it before any other country! :)
Although overall the wait there (8hrs) felt rather long.
